Portraying evolving gender roles aptly has always been a tough nut to crack for ad agencies.
More often than not women have been depicted in the usual stereotypical roles over the years.
But as women learn to assert themselves and increase their spending power, brands are realising that they can no longer pander to the lowest common denominator in their communication.
Thankfully, some brands dare to break stereotypes beautifully and showcase the contemporary woman in her all new avatar.

Although the Fortune Oil ad featuring Akshay Kumar; aims at breaking gender stereotypes by showing a man cooking for soldiers in the army, but the ad also shows how the taste of the cooked food reminded them of their mothers' and wives’ cooking which sends a strong message that the kitchen is essentially a woman’s domain. The soldiers remember their mom’s /wife’s cooking as they might have never seen a male member of their family cook.
This is an advertisement that Re-inforces gender stereotypes and I firmly believe that Media should bring in gender equality instead of conforming to the age old practice of patriarchal norms followed for generations together.

Home-appliance ads like those of refrigerators, washing machines, mixture grinders, exhibit only females to be the consumers. This conveys the message that women are meant to be in the kitchen and do all those chores. Even if there are men in some ads, they never seem to use the products. They are mostly seen standing with their wives, who are the ones using those appliances. This gives a stereotypical message to the audience that, yes females are made for this and males are meant for that.
