The project must be from there immediate surroundings,so that they can collect data , there must be ample scope for observation, experimenting, able to develop curiosity, inquire, investigate, and able to prove the simple facts. SMITA HAZRA
Creating A situation which they face naturally in their life and finding solutions to get rid from the same to act as mono act or role plays or even they can make collage work in groups.
Project work is usually an organised search, construction or task directed towards a specific purpose. It provides an opportunity to the students to identify a problem, to design a work plan, to address the problem, to search for appropriate resources, to carry out their own plan and to draw conclusion on the basis of data/ information collected. In the process, the students learn fundamental principles of science, methods and processes of science, and are exposed to the phases involved in a scientific investigation.
The concepts which are assigned should be such where students can focus on something they would like to learn more about. If possible we should try to build connections to the outside world into the projects.
A better project work will be about any aspect that the students are really facing in their day today life .It generates interests and curiosity in finding out the different reasons for its occurrence Eg- Why some students commonly feel unconscious in the morning assembly . They can easily identify the genuine reasons behind it by collecting information from such students.
Project based learning allows student to indulge and experiment on the assigned topic or task . it initiates thinking , analyzing, comparing and coming to a conclusion. appropriate task should be assigned for undertaking a project that matches the learner's efficiency, age, need and time.
A concept that involves the active and willing participation of all the children in a class and make them interested and curious to learn more about the whys and how's of the science.
Those concepts which can be explored and understood through experimental evidences from day to day life activities may be assigned as a project activity to a group of learners.
Concepts in project activity may include a type of instruction, where students work together to solve real-world problems in their schools and communities. Successful problem solving often requires students to draw on lessons from several disciplines and apply them in a very practical way. The promise of seeing a very real impact becomes the motivation for learning. An example of a school that utilizes a project-based learning curriculum is on CLIMATE ACTION DAY which has already being initiated in many schools across many countries.
5-E Learning Cycle 42. A. The 5-E Learning Cycle The 5-E Learning Cycle is a model that promotes scientific inquiry. Each “E” represents part of the process of helping students sequence their learning experiences to develop a connection between prior knowledge and new concepts. The teacher serves as a facilitator as students construct new knowledge based on thoughtful inquiry and decision making. The 5-E’s are as follows: 43. 1. Engage 2. Explain 3. Explore 4. Elaborate 5. Evaluate 44. 1. Engage The students engage in a task to make connections between the past and present learning experiences. Example: Recall the following: 1. Compounds are classified into acids, bases, and compounds. 2. Some acids and bases are strong; some are weak 3. Indicators such as litmus paper and phenolphthalein can be used to identify acids and bases. Present the situation below to your students. Suppose you want to find out which among the substances in your home are acids and bases. You don’t have any litmus paper or phenolphthalein. What will you do? 45. 2.Explore The students perform a task to get directly involved with key concepts through guided exploration of scientific, geographic, economic, and other data set. Example: Pupils will do an activity. 46. 3.Explain The students give details about the science concepts being developed in the task. Through readings and discussions, the students develop understanding of the major science concepts and verify answers to questions or problems posed in the engage stage. Example: Which of the household substances are acidic? Which substances are basic ? You can answer the questions by comparing the color change of the extract in solutions found in the second table with the color change of extract in hydrochloric acid solution/sodium hydroxide solution. From these two tables you can deduce that milk, tea, coffee and bleaching agent are acids. Shampoo, detergent, baking soda and toothpaste are bases. 47. 4. Elaborate The students simplify the science concept/s in the lesson, e.g. stating the concepts in their own words, and applying new found knowledge to a different situation. Example: Present the situation below to the students Some of us suffer from indigestion or stomach problem in the morning. Our parents would tell us to drink milk, coffee, or tea. Is this a good advice or practice? One cause of indigestion or stomach problem in the morning is hyperacidity. At first coffee, milk or tea may help. In the long run, the problem will worsen. Why? Tea, milk and coffee are acidic. 48. 5. Evaluate The students take a test, quiz, or any authentic assessment instrument to determine how much they benefited from the lesson or activity.

Almost all the day to day concepts may be assign to group projects ( food /nutrition/cost of perishable items from a particular area / travel /water/what not? The teacher need to tabulate her ELO'S and materials and time duration . Before start of a project the children should be clearly explained what is expected of them and how the result should be given and when , the rest of the work will be done by the children themselves
scientific principles related to daily life such as light, magnetism, electricity, different substances present in food (chemicals) and how to test them...
A science project is best described as a basic demonstration of how the world of science works through research, observation, and experimentation. Water is a subject which can be a broad topic and various surveys can be conducted by assigning as group work. Proving through experiments several concepts like Weight, Friction, can also be given as group activity. Earlier it was restricted to only theory. But practical to theory is the 'now thing' in science.
Any concept that can be assigned for cooperative learning may be taken up under project learning. There is so much scope for project based learning. Study of structure of flower, assessment of energy efficiency in households, Status of water harvesting technique in our neighbourhood etc. can be taken up for project based learning.
Project based learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy that involves a dynamic classroom approach in which it is believed that 1) students acquire a deeper knowledge through active exploration of real-world challenges and problems. 2) Students learn about a subject by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, challenge, or problem. 3) It is a style of active learning and inquiry-based learning. PBL contrasts with paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts or portrays a smooth path to knowledge by instead posing questions, problems or scenarios.
A life oriented and a fact finding concept can be assigned to a learner as a Project Activity which will make them stronger not only in Science but also even in Life Sciences in the later life.
Projects in Languages are to be given in such a way that it will make them a good critic, a good proof reader, an investigator in the side of journalism.
Concepts in project activity may include a type of instruction, where students work together to solve real-world problems in their schools and communities. Successful problem solving often requires students to draw on lessons from several disciplines and apply them in a very practical way.

The concepts which can be explored and understood through experimental evidences from day to day life activities may be assigned as a project activity to a group of learners. For example how to grow plants from seeds step by step the can observe and write the observations in a tabular form, properties of solids, liquids can be observed using an ice cube etc.
Let them explore types of plants & flowers of school/ home garden & observe. Then collect observations & compare them on the basis of similarities and differences.
1.Projects should be based on children's interest. 2.Projects should include more practical approach than paper work approach. 3.Projects should display simple laws of nature/science from the surrounding environment
Topics from the real life examples and from thier surroundings. It could be according to their age and level. Different topics could be given so that they can choose acc to their interest.
Simple experiments modeling the day-to-day observations can be assigned to a group of learners where they can brainstorm and understand the science involved.
Project Based Learning is a strategy in which students produce a product related to a topic. The teacher is a facilitator in this student-centered approach and provides scaffolding and guidance when necessary. Groups of students work collaboratively using multiple unit resources to gain a deeper understanding of standard based core unit concepts, then put that understanding into practice as they complete their project.

The project concept should be related to days todays one which all the children can involved and share their ideas together to find the result. D.Chiipfoza, JNV.Roing.
It's very useful for students as well as for teachers. It has been my pleasure to interact with students by using ict and my own innovation as a teacher . YouTube has helped me a lot to introduce concepts which were beyond my scope.
A better project work will be about any aspect that the students are really facing in their day today life .It generates interests and curiosity in finding out the different reasons for its occurrence Eg- Why some students commonly feel unconscious in the morning assembly . They can easily identify the genuine reasons behind it by collecting information from such students.
Topic should be chosen in such a way that it is based on real life experience, students should be able to learn by doing, interaction cooperate with each other in a group. It should be learning by fun. The topic should be such that each member is able to take part in it .
ANY ACTIVITY THAT AROUSES THE STUDENTS INTEREST IN HIS IMMEDIATE SURROUNDINGS CAN BE GIVEN TO THEM. CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN TO SEE THAT THE ACTIVITY SHOULD NOT BE A BURDEN ON THE CHILD/PARENTS AND THE TEACHER. NOWADAYS A LOT OF ACTIVITIES ARE BEING FORCED ON THE CHILDREN IN THE NAME OF INTEGRATION OF DIFFERENT SUBJECTS WHICH ALL STUDENTS MAY NOT LIKE TO DO. LET THE CHILD OBSERVE, FEEL AND EXPERIENCE FOR HIMSELF
A great way for students to demonstrate their knowledge is to retrieve and synthesize information. This can be achieved by collaborating with their peers to create something new: a written piece, a pamphlet, an infographic, or even sample test questions. Many assessments are already set up to promote creating some product (e.g., essay), so modifying it to be a group project should be straightforward. Although students can complete these activities individually, collaboration lets them practice skills they will need in the workplace.
Project for a group should be on a topic which involves various concepts. It should be on those topics in which the children can collect information from multiple sources. for eg Leaves. Each group member can collect leaves from plants found in their immediate surroundings. all the group members can then study about the various types and patterns of leaves collected by the group and prepare a project report collectively.
Anything that satiates their curiosity and fortifies their observation skills and which has a strong nexus to real life situation will fit the bill nicely. Like since today's children being prone to become couch potatoes experimenting on eating healthily and in appropriate amounts, what to eat and what not to and how much etc. This is like killing two birds with a stone. It not only enhances their scientific skills but also helps them to blossom in sensible and healthy individuals
Simple concepts related to their day to day life can be given as projects in class 6. For example- 1)You must have seen a garden lizard around your home. Next time whenever you see it, observe carefully and find out what it takes for food. Is the food different from that of a house lizard?
2)Make a list (with pictures, when possible) of food items generally taken by people of different regions of India. Place these on a large outline map of India to display in your classroom.
3)Find out the names of plants that grow in water and which are eaten as food.

DeleteProject work is usually an organised search, construction
or task directed towards a specific purpose. It provides an opportunity to the
students to identify a problem, to design a work plan, to address the problem,
to search for appropriate resources, to carry out their own plan and to draw
conclusion on the basis of data/ information collected. In the process, the students
learn fundamental principles of science, methods and processes of science, and are
exposed to the phases involved in a scientific investigation.

5-E Learning Cycle
ReplyDelete42. The 5-E’s are as follows:
43. 1. Engage 2. Explain 3. Explore 4. Elaborate 5. Evaluate
